what will you do with two billion rupiahs?

Saturday, September 30th, 2006

Two billion rupiahs is about two hundred thousands dollars. What can one do with two hundreds thousands dollars?
Well, if i have the chance owning two billion rupiahs. The first thing i want to do is upgrade my computer. I will build nice gaming rig with dual graphic cards in SLI configuration that has 1 gig of memory . how much such gaming rig cost? $2000? $3000? well let’s make it $4000 ! So there’s $196.000 left on my bank account..
The next thing i want todo is starting a startup. Starting a startup is one of my wildest dreams. What kind of startup can i make with $100.000+?Well, I do have some thought that someday i will startup a web 2.0 kind of services . I have no idea what kind of services, though. It looks like all the great ideas have been taken. Search engine? check!  Blog Hosting? check! Bookmark Services? check!  Dating Services? check! Social Networking Services? check!. Although, i’m pretty sure there are still  huge markets out there for a new kind of web 2.0 service.
My country, Indonesia, is known for its difficulties for startups especially internet startups. A long list of obstacles including corrupt goverment officials, lack of good internet infrastructures and  high operational-cost-that-has-nothing-to-do-with-operational-purposes (figure that out yourself!), greet us in unfriendly manner first time we build startup (at least that what people told me). Besides, Internet penetration in my country is low. The projected growth in 2007 for internet penetration is only 20%. That means there will be 50 million internet users in 2007. Well actually, that is a huge amount of potential customer isn’t it? But i don’t recall an internet business in Indonesia that made it to IPO. We Indonesian people prefer foreign based internet services, like friendster, or blogspot. I think  it is just natural, considering most of our internet services suck. Two kind of internet services that are still have relatively loyal customers nowadays are news services (like detik) and massively multiplayer online gaming (the games are mostly imported not home-brewed in Indonesia).
Maybe i should widen my target customers. Maybe it will not just for Indonesians. I think that’s what internet is all about, reaching people out of physical or even ideological boundaries. Maybe i should start somewhere else, like Singapore .. or Thailand, where internet infrastructures are better and cheaper(?).
Hmm, maybe when i do own two billion rupiahs… Indonesia will be a far better place for internet startups.
So, goodbye, good night, and remember.. don’t let those hypocritical bed bugs bite..

Here is my new blog on friendster. Can’t promise it’ll be regularly updated, though. But i can promise you it will be regularly outdated…. he he.. (funny? no?).
Why hypocritical fat bastard? I don’t know. That’s the first that crossed my mind. Well, actually there were many, such as An Awesome Blog Made by a Red Cheeked Hippopotamus, or A Blog by the most Deceptive Gorgeous Looking Man Ever Lived or simply A Blog. But i prefer Hypocritical Fat Bastard because It sounds so cooool you can name a band after it. And the best thing about the name is, i can be as hypocritical as i want to. At least i sincerely admit that i am hypocritical.. You see, i’m sooo hypocritical that i sincerely admit that i’m hypocritical. Isn’t that the ultimate hypocrisy? It equals Deep Thought’s 42

Goodbye, Good night, Don’t let the hypocritical bed bugs bite..
