I Don’t Believe in F****** Valentine’s Day

Tuesday, February 13th, 2007

It’s 14th february. All hells break loose. Lovers spend money to show their loved ones how much they love them. Buy them roses, chocolates and candies or some luxury stuffs. I’ve even read on some article that in february condom sales are skyrocketed.
I don’t believe in valentine’s day. I hate valentine’s day. I even hate february ! This is the month  when everybody suddenly become ultra-romantic. Roses are everywhere, heart-shaped chocolates, candies, jewelleries are everywhere. And those reddish pinkish heart-shaped blablablas decorations.  Those are creepy. I mean, we don’t have to wait until 14th february to be a romantic person, do we?
Some said that all these buzzes on valentine’s day celebrations are just a way to increase sales. This article said Americans spend $13 billion on valentine’s day. That huge amount of money goes to teddy bear makers, florists, and other romantic gifts vendors.
Surprisingly, in Indonesia it turned out differently. Kompas reported that the sales of flowers in Indonesia are decreasing every year because lack of demand and bad weather. Although some seasonal valentine’s day gifts vendors (?) usually mushroomed in this time of year.
Oh and you should know that valentine’s day does have its impact on our planet.

But.. you know what i realize on this dusk of valentine’s day? It’s that the Indonesian board of censorship has a great humor.  I watched this film called 200 Cigarettes (the only casts i recognized were Janeane Garofalo and Courtney Love.. oh and Ben Affleck too) , on Global TV. I wasn’t all too interested in the movie, but it got my attention when i realized that the indonesian subtitle mentioned the v***** and p**** (hint:genitalia), but the mentioning of ‘F’ words in the movie were beeped out! That is one crazy censorship, isn’t it?.
If someone is mature enough to read v***** and p**** in the subtitle, i’m pretty sure it’s ok for him/her to hear some ‘F’ words. Why didn’t they beeped out v***** and p**** in the first place? Or, they can at least change the v***** and p**** in subtitle into something more decent, like ‘pee-pee part’ (or wee-wee part?). Haha.. that would be hilarious!

Yes we Indonesians, do have a great sense of humor. That’s why some of us still laughing in a condition people from other countries might think not worth laughing. Even Amrozi, one of the first bali-bombing terrorists, has one of the greatest smile on earth. That’s why he is sentenced to death.. for good.

Well, I guess that’s it for now. I’m done my rambling. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not against people celebrating valentine’s day. I’m not against people being romantic and spend extra love on february. I just think that it’s better if we increase our loving and romantic nature for the whole year. Our civilization (human being) needs a lot of love to be shared right now, more than ever.

Oh.. and i do like chocolates, it would be nice if you send me some.

Goodbye, Goodnight … don’t let those hypocritical (valentine’s day-celebrating) bed bugs bite!

Aburizal Bakrie is an honest man

Friday, February 9th, 2007

If you live in Indonesia, and watch the news. You must’ve known that recently, The Minister of People’s Welfare -Aburizal Bakrie- has spurred some controversy regarding his comment on flood disaster in Jakarta.
On one interview he said :

I think we do need to handle the problem (victims of flood disaster .ed). But it doesn’t need to be blown up. If we see.. the victims are still laughing and all. So don’t put it like the world is going to end like your station (SCTV) said..

Well i’m not a good translator, here is the original quote in Bahasa Indonesia:

Saya kira masalahnya perlu kita tangani, tetapi tidak perlu dibesar-besarkan. Kalau kita lihat, para korban itu masih ketawa dan sebagainya.Jadi jangan sampai dikondisikan seolah-olah dunia mau kiamat seperti yang televisi anda katakan

First time i heard it on television, I was shocked!.. How on earth he dared saying such thing?
The victims are still laughing ?
So the government will act accordingly if the victims can’t laugh anymore? So the victims, who’s had hard time watching their home flooded, don’t have any right to laugh? So they suppose to cry and whine all the time?
That’s just nut!
As far as i know, this year flood is the worst that ever happen in Jakarta. No wonder the news on the event seems overexposed. Because it needs to be overexposed!.
Jakarta is the capital city of Indonesia, and somehow there’s always big flood every five years. There is some saying, it goes like this "Di Jakarta, banjir tidak pernah ingkar janji", which literally means "In Jakarta, flood never breaks it promise". So when it said the flood will come in 5 years.. it wil definitely come in 5 years.
And what strikes me is, the officials, especially the high-ranked ones. Always seems to blame the nature on every disaster.
Maybe it’s our nature as mere mortals, that we never take the blame lightly.
And maybe that’s why  Aburizal Bakrie  said such awful thing. He was just being honest.. and telling what’s on his mind. Aburizal Bakrie was just being himself. He is not a politician capable of bull-shiitaking his way out of trouble. He is just an outright honest man, with a twisted sense of social awareness.
Somehow, in a bizarre way, i feel happy about that.. because honesty is always good isn’t it?.  Especially in hypocrite-infested country like Indonesia.

goodbye, goodnight.. don’t let those hypocritical bed bugs bite .
